Reuters: The US is saving Ukraine from a powerful attack by Russian hackers
The United States of America is trying to prevent a large-scale hacker attack on Ukraine by taking control of hundreds of thousands of virus-infected routers and data storage devices, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
It is reported by Reuters.
A federal judge in Pennsylvania has reportedly allowed the FBI to seize a domain allegedly used by the Russian hacking group Sofacy. This will allow the FBI to find out the location of infected devices and report this to authorities in other countries so that malware can be quickly removed from infected equipment.
“This operation is the first step in dismantling a botnet that provides Sofacy hackers with a variety of capabilities that can be used for a variety of malicious purposes, including intelligence gathering and theft of valuable information,” John Demers, assistant attorney general for national security, said in a statement.
It should be noted that the US government announced attempts to eliminate the botnet after Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO.O) published a report on a hacker campaign, which stated that devices from Linksys, MikroTik, Netgear Inc, TP-Link and QNAP were infected.
According to Cisco, the largest number of devices infected with the VPNFilter virus are located in Ukraine. Cisco shared technical details with the US and Ukrainian governments, as well as with companies that sell cybersecurity software, hardware and services.
Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine announced that Russia was preparing a powerful cyber attack on Ukrainian government agencies on the eve of the Champions League final in Kyiv.
