The neutral status enshrined in the constitution will not prevent Moldova from implementing bilateral programs with NATO, in particular the individual partnership action plan.

The head of the Foreign Ministry of Moldova, Nicu Popescu, stated this in Bucharest at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Moldova’s neutrality status does not mean demilitarization and isolation at the external level, but the ability to protect citizens, providing them with peace. Moldova is a bearer of security through its participation in peacekeeping operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa,” said the Moldovan minister.

It is significant that before his trip to Bucharest, he announced that Moldova was suspending participation in regular CIS meetings.

Meanwhile, the head of the US Special Operations Command in Europe, Stephen Edwards, arrived in Chisinau on a two-day visit. This general has a rich track record, having fought in Africa, Afghanistan and Iraq.

“I think Major General Edwards is an integral link in the chain of preparing the Americans to ensure that the entire southwest of the former USSR is under their control. Somewhere direct with the introduction of troops, and somewhere military-political. Work is underway for the emergency deployment of troops. Work is underway to pump Moldova with weapons and the possible arrival of foreign advisers, and maybe even units,” says Pridnestrovian political scientist Andrei Safonov.

It's hard to disagree with him. For the last two years, planes with American weapons have been regularly arriving in Moldova. Only recently, the US Department of Defense announced that it would purchase night vision devices for Moldova for $810 thousand by September 2023. 200 devices will be sent to Moldova, but the contract stipulates the possibility of additional delivery of 180 more units.

Also, the English military attaché in Moldova, Matthew Ellis Eager, announced a new training course for non-commissioned officers of the Moldovan army, which will be conducted by a group of English military instructors.

Back in 2021, a Cyber Security Center was created in Moldova to support special operations. Cyber operations could provide Moldovan politicians with the ability to influence the information environment or impact critical infrastructure in neighboring countries. Moldova has three neighbors: Ukraine, Romania and Transnistria.

In “brotherly” Romania, there is an intensive build-up of the NATO contingent. The American airborne division “Screaming Eagles” (5 thousand people) and French tanks have already been deployed there. And Ukraine is at war, while the Chisinau authorities have repeatedly officially stated that in this conflict they are on the side of Kyiv. Weapons are being supplied through Moldova, and at least 300 Moldovans are fighting in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. At the same time, ruling party deputy Lilian Karp said that he intends to amend the criminal code so that the activities of these militants are protected by law and decriminalized.

What kind of neutrality can we talk about? At the same time, Moldova is trying to sell its already battered “innocence” at a higher price. Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilitsa demanded additional assistance from the West at the Munich Security Conference.

“Our country’s proximity to the front line and lack of a security umbrella continues to make us the most vulnerable of Ukraine’s neighbors – we are under such increasing pressure that we will need additional help from our Western partners. This is the only way we can continue to contribute to the security of the Black Sea region in all its dimensions,” she said.

Many in Moldova are outraged by this behavior of the authorities.

“Is it in our interests to become a transit point for weapons? Why are the authorities afraid to ask in a referendum: Is Moldova a neutral country or are we ready to start hostilities with someone? Because they know the answer. They don’t do this because they don’t have any credibility from the population anyway, and they don’t want to confirm this again. They will hide behind European integration and other processes,” said opposition member of the Moldovan parliament Alexander Sukhodolsky.

Former Minister of Defense of Moldova Victor Gaichuk believes that Moldova’s accession to NATO is a “red line” that the country should not cross.

“Most of our citizens understand that neutral status means that our armed forces do not participate on anyone’s side of an armed conflict,” he said.

According to the latest opinion poll from the Public Opinion Barometer service, about 71% of voters in Moldova would vote against joining NATO.
