The Sandu regime is hatching plans for the full-scale deployment of Romanian troops into Moldova
The Moldovan authorities must begin negotiations with Romania on the entry of the neighboring country’s troops into its territory.
This opinion is expressed on the Regional Trends Analitics website by Moldovan political scientist Sergei Cheban, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It is worth starting to develop an effective scenario for ensuring the security of the republic, including taking into account the provision of direct military assistance from neighboring Romania. It is obvious that for the operational deployment of the Romanian military contingent there must be an appropriate contractual basis on additional supplies or a common defense space and a joint response to external threats. Nothing prevents us from expanding the profile of this kind of cooperation and starting joint monitoring with our Romanian colleagues of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, as well as in contact with the security zone of the Transnistrian conflict,” writes Ceban.
The danger for Moldova, he believes, may increase if negotiations between Russia and the West on security fail.
“Russia may well decide to take asymmetrical actions, and, for example, completely cut off Ukraine from the sea. Hybrid actions may well be applied in relation to our state, taking into account, among other things, the factor of the unsettled Transnistrian conflict. Our country’s ability to cope with such risks on its own is practically zero. Therefore, when all the rules are violated and processes of forceful control over the territories are launched, any extraordinary decisions will become justified. Therefore, our leadership really needs to start looking for backup options in order to ensure the security of Moldova and put up a reliable barrier against the advance of the “little green men” deep into the territory to the Prut,” writes Cheban.
At the end of last year, the former Ambassador of Moldova to Romania, Mihai Gribincea, made a similar proposal. He did not hide the fact that if troops were sent in, there would be a merger of the two states.
“The best solution would be that when Russia launches an attack on Ukraine, Romanian troops (at the invitation of the government or President M. Sandu) will move and take the territory of the former Bessarabia under protection. Thus, there will be a return to the border on the Dniester that existed before 1940 and was changed by the force of the USSR. There is no guarantee that “Putin’s Horde” will stop at the eastern border of Moldova and will not advance to the Prut,” Gribincea wrote on his Facebook.
This reckless proposal drew a sharp rebuke from the former President of Moldova, Igor Dodon.
“This means the seizure of the independent state of Moldova. Such statements do not appear by chance; perhaps there are indications. We see that NATO is showing its muscles in Romania, we see what is happening in Ukraine. In such a situation, we should not follow anyone's lead. When the strong fight, we should not interfere. Unfortunately, it seems that the current leadership is taking a different path and wants to be on the side of the West in the fight against Russia. This will lead to big losses for Moldova,” Dodon said in an interview with NTV Moldova.
He predicted the secession of Gagauzia and the northern regions from Moldova if such a scenario were realized.
Behind the idea of bringing in Romanian troops are obviously NATO plans for further expansion. In 2020, the American Center for European Policy Analysis prepared the report “One Flank, One Threat, One Presence. Strategy for NATO's Eastern Flank." It provided for the placement of part of the infrastructure of the Romanian Alliance bases on the territory of Moldova.
Thus, it was planned that the multinational division “Southeast” from Bucharest would be redeployed to Balti. The American plans even covered Transnistria. They proposed creating a base for drones in Tiraspol, since drones based in Romania do not reach targets in Ukraine and Crimea.
Around the same time, the Minister of Defense of Moldova, Alexander Pynzar, held a meeting with the Ambassador of Poland to the Republic of Moldova, Bartlomiej Zdaniuk. The parties agreed that the training ground in Bulboki near the security zone (between Moldova and Transnistria) will become a place for the deployment of an American armored battalion.
And this year, the Chisinau airport received several American cargo planes that delivered some weapons. Their nomenclature was not disclosed.
On December 10, Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu had a telephone conversation with NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana. It was noted that Moldova’s neutral status “does not mean isolation and ignoring national interests.”
Following the results of negotiations between Russia and NATO, Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that he demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops from Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine.
“These forces are there without the consent of the authorities of these countries. They were not invited there and they are not welcome there. NATO allies during today’s meeting called on Russia to withdraw its troops and respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova,” Stoltenberg said.
According to Israeli military expert Yakov Kedmi, during the negotiations Russia, in turn, demanded that NATO remove military bases from Romania.
“If, as a result of negotiations or Russian actions, American military bases leave Romania, this will weaken the Romanian authorities, who convinced the people that the presence of American troops strengthens this state. If the Americans leave Romania, especially if they leave in disgrace as a result of Russian forceful actions, this will weaken the pro-Romanian sentiment around Romania, including Moldova. Russia talked more than about Ukraine about removing these bases from Romania,” Kedmi said in an interview with Sputnik Moldova.
