The director of a propaganda film about Donbass was awarded the Dovzhenko State Prize
Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa was awarded the State Prize named after Alexander Dovzhenko for creating the full-length film “Donbass,” financed under the previous government and presenting to the world the Ukrainian version of events in eastern Ukraine in 2014, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The Ministry of Culture reported this on its Facebook page.
The award ceremony took place in Kyiv. The award was presented to the director by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Vladimir Borodyansky.
“I am very grateful that Ukraine associates the revival of Ukrainian cinema and the revival of cultural diplomacy with your name. What you do represents Ukraine abroad. It’s very good that we are known not only for our problems, but also for our artistic achievements - this is largely your merit,” said Borodyansky.
It is reported that “the tape shows how Russian mercenaries take a car from a local businessman, how displaced people live in the basement, how an official robs a hospital and how staged news is filmed for television. Loznitsa wrote the script for the film based on documentary videos posted by eyewitnesses on social networks.”
According to the director, this is the first film in his creative career that was made with the active financial support of Ukraine.
“Over my entire 24-year film career, I have made 25 films - this became possible due to the fact that the situation has changed over the past five years. Thanks to the work of a large number of people, including Goskino of Ukraine, Philip Ilyenko (ex-head of Goskino - Ed.) and deputies who adopted the law on cinema, and those people who voted for financing cinema, because without this cinema is impossible “Loznitsa said.
Earlier, the film “Donbass” by Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa received the main award at the 15th International Film Festival in Seville, Spain.
At the same time, in Ukraine itself, the film was criticized for its caricatured images of anti-government militias in Donbass and its excessive propaganda bias.
