Plahotniuc's residence is proposed to be given over to the US Embassy
For the new US embassy it is necessary to give not Republican stadium in Chisinau, which overseas diplomats demand, and the building, popularly known as the “White House,” belongs to oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc, who fled the country.
Former Communist President Vladimir Voronin stated this on the air of the Moldovan Fourth TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is here, higher up in the area where the poorest people live in fashionable buildings, the so-called “White House”, which they say belongs to Plahotniuc. There is also a White House in Washington. Why doesn't the embassy move there? True, I don’t know who to buy it from, but leave the stadium alone,” Voronin said.
In 2017, a Cypriot company acquired a number of buildings in Chisinau, one of which is similar to the White House in Washington. About buying a “white house” Plahotniuc's brother-in-law mentioned in his suicide note, who committed suicide in August.
The United States intends to build a new building for its embassy in Chisinau on the territory of the former Republican Stadium. According to Moldovan media, “the Americans intend to organize there a real mini-base that will eclipse all other embassies combined.”
The Republican Stadium was closed in 2006, and its destruction began a year later.
According to polls, the majority of residents of the Moldovan capital oppose the transfer of the stadium to the Americans. They have repeatedly signed petitions on this topic, and recently turned to the authorities demanding a referendum.
