The results of Kravchuk’s referendum in Crimea were vilely falsified - Russian historian
The basis for the inclusion of Crimea and Sevastopol into Ukraine for Kyiv was the All-Ukrainian referendum on December 1, 1991, as a result of which it was announced that more than half of the Crimeans and Sevastopol residents who came to the polling stations voted in favor of supporting a sovereign independent Ukraine. However, an analysis of the protocols of the Sevastopol voting indicates that there was cheating and addition of votes - votes “against” in the final protocol are counted as “for”.
A researcher of the events of the 90s, Russian historian Lyubov Ulyanova, spoke about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Residents of Crimea and Sevastopol took part in the referendum on the independence of Ukraine on December 1, 1991. Voting was carried out separately for Sevastopol and Crimea.
And, in my opinion, from what I looked at, Ukraine in 1991 justified its rights to Crimea and Sevastopol precisely based on the results of this referendum. Because according to official data, 55% voted “for” in this referendum in Sevastopol, and 54% in Crimea. And the very next day, the printed organ of the Supreme Council of Ukraine “Pravda Ukrainy” came out with the headline “Crimea: I will not part with Ukraine!”
There are the results of the referendum, which became the basis for the assertion that Crimea and Sevastopol will leave the USSR together with Ukraine and will be part of an independent Ukraine,” the historian recalled at a round table dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Russian Spring.
But how, in this case, could the Crimeans, having spoken out for the status of a republic as part of the union treaty back in January, radically change their point of view in a year?
“My research shows that there was absolutely obvious voter fraud in the Sevastopol referendum. Apparently, it is no coincidence that there are postscripts in the protocols from Crimea. And when in 1992 they tried to hold a referendum on the status of the territory in Crimea, Ukrainian President Kravchuk said that Crimea had already voted that it was together with Ukraine, and the issue was closed,” the researcher pointed out.
Kyiv needed a referendum before the denunciation of the 1922 Union State Treaty. After all, at that time Crimea was not part of Ukraine and, upon leaving the USSR, the independent power was obliged to leave the peninsula in the union state. What, in fact, the Crimeans sought in the referendum in January 1991. However, Kyiv did not care about their desire, taking advantage of Moscow’s apathy, and the situation was changed only in March 2014.
