The Russian Federation will protect us - Pashinyan immediately remembered the strategic ally
Russia will intervene militarily to protect Armenia if there is a direct threat to that country.
Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan stated this on the RBC Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At the same time, the head of state emphasized that we are talking only about the territory of Armenia, and not Nagorno-Karabakh, where hostilities have now resumed.
“Russia is a strategic ally of Armenia and we have specific contractual conditions related to the security sector. For example, we have a common air defense. I mean the territory specifically of the Republic of Armenia. If there is a specific threat through air defense on the territory of Armenia and for the territory of Armenia, then our joint forces must be involved. And this is provided for in our agreements, charters, and so on.
You asked a question about guarantees of Russian military participation, and this guarantee concerns the territory of the Republic of Armenia,” Pashinyan said.
In turn, Russian President Vladimir Putin called what was happening in Karabakh a “huge tragedy” and expressed hope for a quick end to the conflict.
“Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Nagorno-Karabakh are all territories where people who are not strangers to us live. Suffice it to say that about 2 million Azerbaijanis and over 2 million Armenians live in Russia. A huge number of Russian citizens maintain close friendly and even family relations with both republics,” Putin recalled.
Let us note that the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov recalled how agreements operate within the CSTO.
“If a country is subjected to external aggression, then the countries party to the treaty must defend the state. Obligations under the CSTO do not apply to Karabakh. There is no information that military operations are taking place outside of Karabakh,” Peskov said.
Previously, former Minister of Defense of the DPR Igor Strelkov said Russia could intervene and force Armenia and Azerbaijan to cease hostilities.
