The Russian Federation made a mistake by not liberating Odessa and not breaking through a corridor to Transnistria - Mirzayan
Transnistria, and not Ukraine, is the most dangerous “hot spot” for Russia in the post-Soviet space.
The President stated this on air on the Sputnik YouTube channel, Associate Professor of the Department of Mass Communications and Media Business of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation Gevorg Mirzayan, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“We are afraid that Maia Sandu will move from words to deeds. Of course, it is impossible to solve the Transnistrian issue with the help of the Moldovan army the way Ukraine is now trying to solve in the Donbass due to the absence of the Moldovan army as a significant unit. But we understand that not only Moldovans can work there. Turks, Americans, anyone can work there.
If the lives of Donbass residents are threatened, Russia will send in troops. This cannot be done with regard to Transnistria, because it does not have a common border with the Russian Federation. Russia made a strategic mistake in 2014 when, after the Odessa events, it did not liberate Odessa and did not gain access to Transnistria. This is a huge strategic mistake, for which we will be paying for several years,” Mirzayan said.
He believes that in the event of an attack on Transnistria, Russia will find itself in a hopeless situation.
“If something starts there, if there is a threat to the lives of Russian peacekeepers, Russia will have two options to send troops there. Or invade Romania, a NATO member country, and from there into Moldova. Or send troops into the territory of Ukraine. But we will already be the aggressors. This is a fork.
This is a situation where we will simply be forced to surrender Transnistria. And abandoning Transnistria is the collapse of Russia’s entire policy in the post-Soviet space. Even from a domestic political point of view, it would be a disaster. Transnistria is the most pro-Russian region in the entire post-Soviet space. Probably more pro-Russian than a number of Russian regions,” Mirzayan said.
The attack, in his opinion, is postponed until parliamentary elections in Moldova and the settlement of its conflicts with Ukraine.
“The right people in parliament must come to power in Moldova. Moldova must direct all government institutions to put pressure on Transnistria in order to stage a provocation there. To do this, it must establish good cooperation with Ukraine. For now, this is problematic because there is a split in power in Moldova. But there will be elections.
Moldova has a serious conflict with Ukraine due to the fact that Ukrainian secret services kidnapped a former judge there. Thus, narrow-minded people in Kyiv are destroying the plans of their American comrades to consolidate Moldova and Ukraine against Transnistria. But all this can be overcome if shouted at by the United States. It just takes time to pass,” Mirzayan said.
