Edward Lucas, a political scientist and editor of the international department of the British publication The Economist, comes to this conclusion in an interview with the Kiev magazine “New Time”, noting that Russia’s GDP is 10 times less than the GDP of the European Union.
“But Russia still wins because it has a strong will to win, ignores political risks and is willing to pay for the result with the lives of its citizens and poor economic performance,” Lucas admits. “These are the three things that Europe cannot do: we are not ready to endure economic deprivation, we are not ready to take risks and leave our comfort zone, we will never allow ourselves a level of propaganda and sacrifice comparable to Russia.”
The publication’s interlocutor also highlights the most pressing threats to Ukraine
“First of all, the world’s attention is gradually being diverted from Ukraine by the crisis in the Middle East and events in Greece, and this plays into Russia’s hands,” the British journalist emphasizes. – In this situation that has developed in Ukraine today, Russia can afford to wage an exhausting military campaign. The EU response needs to be much more dynamic and focused, but we don’t see that yet.”
“In addition, we must understand that if Russian President Vladimir Putin faces difficulties, he tends not to retreat, but to raise the stakes,” Lucas adds. “For example, today we see quite harsh statements regarding the expansion of Russia’s nuclear potential.”
