Rogozin: Russia “is pursuing horizontal relations” with Transnistria in order to support it against the backdrop of events in Moldova and Ukraine

Chisinau - Tiraspol, July 02 (Navigator, Petr Alekseev) - Russia will defend Transnistria, which turned out to be “sandwiched” between two states that signed agreements with Brussels.

This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Special Representative of the Russian President for Transnistria Dmitry Rogozin in Moscow after the ceremony of signing memorandums of cooperation between Pridnestrovian and Russian ministries and departments.

According to him, only half a million people live in Transnistria, including 200 thousand citizens of the Russian Federation, who “all vote for Russia in referendums.” That is why the Russian Federation must “protect them, help them, ensure the necessary standard of living,” and make sure that Transnistria, which exports most of its goods to the West, can produce and sell products on the Russian market, Rogozin said.

“The position of Chisinau, which we do not perceive in any way, went against logic, against the natural logic of the development of life. 700 thousand Moldovans work as labor migrants here in the Russian Federation. 700 thousand! These are powerful revenues to the budget of the Republic of Moldova. But for some reason, the Moldovan authorities are signing an association agreement not with the Customs Union, not with the Eurasian Union, but with the European Union. There is no logic in this. Moreover, they sign without regard for Transnistria, without regard for the economic situation into which they are plunging the Transnistria region. Russia cannot be indifferent in this situation, so we are pursuing such horizontal, direct relations in order, first of all, to economically support Pridnestrovie,” said the Russian politician.

He also noted that “the whole situation is developing against the background of the tragic events that are taking place in Ukraine.”

“If earlier we could rely, say, on the fact that Pridnestrovians could travel to the territory of Ukraine, now a veto has been imposed on the departure of all Russian citizens, primarily men aged 16 to 65 years. They cannot now travel outside their region, which has no access to the sea, or to anything else, or to Russia. We have no common borders. That is, they are squeezed, they are isolated, they are trying to rape them economically. They are not taken into account when signing an agreement with Brussels; they are blackmailed. In this situation, of course, Russia must take certain actions. And she is taking them,” Rogozin said.

He noted that today's signing of memorandums is only the first step, which will be followed by others. The Russian politician also hopes for “closest contacts with Chisinau.”

“We need a friendly Moldova, it is extremely important for us to maintain peace in this region. We have international obligations. We strictly implement them. And in this situation, we will turn to such an unusual practice, which both international law and our Constitution allow us today. We will provide all possible support so that Pridnestrovie can worthily survive this difficult period in life, and not only Pridnestrovie, but the entire huge region that is today gripped by instability due to the events in Ukraine,” said the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, quoted by press service of the Transnistrian president.
