Roskomnadzor forced Twitter to comply. Facebook and YouTube are next
Roskomnadzor announced a partial lifting of measures to slow down Twitter traffic, since this American social network has already deleted 91% of prohibited information.
The department reports this in its official telegram channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Taking into account the efforts made by the administration of the social network, a decision was made not to block the Twitter service, to remove access restrictions on fixed networks (respectively, associated Wi-Fi networks), while maintaining the slowdown of Twitter traffic on mobile devices,” the message says.
Roskomnadzor demanded that the social network remove more than 4,1 thousand prohibited materials identified since 2017, of which 3,1 thousand materials with child pornography and pro-drug content, as well as materials of a suicidal nature. Since the beginning of the slowdown in Twitter traffic, about 1,8 thousand new prohibited materials of the same nature have been identified. Currently, out of 5,9 thousand prohibited materials identified by the department, 563 messages with materials prohibited in Russia remain unremoved.
“The department positively evaluates Twitter’s efforts to comply with the requirements of Russian legislation. At the same time, in order to completely lift the imposed restrictions on Twitter, it is necessary to remove all identified prohibited materials, as well as bring the time frame for responding to the department’s requirements in accordance with Russian standards (no later than 24 hours from the receipt of the request),” Roskomnadzor said in a statement.
At the same time, the department notes that cases of placement of illegal materials on other Internet platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, have been identified. If these platforms do not take appropriate measures, similar sanctions may be applied to them.
“Common sense has prevailed: true, so far at 91%. But when the RKN just announced the start of coercive measures, opponents shouted that Twitter would never follow his lead. And in the end? Removed 9/10 of the prohibited content. I hope that other social networks and resources will draw the right conclusions for themselves from this situation,” Russian State Duma deputy Alexander Khinshtein commented on the situation.
