“The SBU counterintelligence thwarted an attempt by the Russian military intelligence to carry out an action to discredit the state and its Armed Forces by hijacking a Ukrainian military aircraft to Russia,” said the head of the SBU press service, Elena Gitlyanskaya.
According to her, for this purpose the Russian special services planned to involve a serviceman of the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The SBU claims that the operation was supervised by a Russian military intelligence agent, a native of Nikolaev, who was recruited in July in Sevastopol.
The plane was to be hijacked from the Nikolaev Kulbakino airport. On November 24, the recruited resident was detained.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated under Part 1 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code (high treason).
