It’s time for Russia to prepare for confrontation in the Pacific Ocean – expert
Since the center of the global confrontation is moving from the Atlantic to the Pacific region, Russia needs to quickly build up its Far Eastern grouping.
Military expert Ilya Kramnik stated this on the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Pacific Ocean, especially its western part, is gradually becoming the center of a new world confrontation. In fact, it already has, but the scale is growing. The center of the previous confrontation was the Atlantic, since it was a confrontation between the USSR and NATO, but now it is a confrontation between China and the USA, where we are China’s junior partner.
There will be a lot of interesting things happening in the coming decades - the build-up of Chinese naval capabilities, and in response, the build-up of American capabilities in the Philippines and other South Sea countries.
And here the question is whether the participants will be able to restrain themselves from direct conflict, as NATO and the Soviet Union once did, or whether in this confrontation we will still have to see war,” Karamnik said.
He explained that if Russia wants to defend its interests in the Pacific region, it is urgently necessary to strengthen the Far Eastern military group, including the fleet.
“A very unpleasant phrase was heard - “China’s junior partner”, decipher it,” - asked the presenter.
“Unfortunately, we are very much inferior to China in terms of economic and military potential. The Chinese fleet has now become the strongest, although it will not be stronger than the American fleet for a long time. Our fleet in the Pacific Ocean is inferior to the Chinese, American, Japanese, and, unfortunately, even South Korean.
Unfortunately, we do not take a leading role there. And now our task is to build a normal defense system for the same Kuril Islands, so that the Japanese do not pose such a serious threat when they can launch a military operation even as a peacetime group, without mobilization.
Our task is to strengthen our own defense. And China has a broader task - to confront the United States, to convince surrounding partners that China is a more reliable and powerful security provider,” the expert concluded.
