Russia is lucky with the Russophile Vucic
Russia will support Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and not the local opposition, because he is the biggest Russophile in Europe, and his opponents, on the contrary, did nasty things to Russia and Russians when they were in power.
Political scientist Nikita Bondarev writes about this in the Balkanist publication, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The main achievement of Aleksandar Vucic for me is that during the years of his reign, Russophilia in Serbia became mainstream. Criticism of Russia and Vladimir Putin in Serbia today is tantamount to political suicide. Even systemic liberals, for whom the main reference point was, is and will be the American State Department, are forced, when speaking about our country, to express themselves in a streamlined and neutral manner.
Only a completely inveterate democrat, who has not passed the five percent parliamentary threshold for many years, can afford direct criticism of Russia. Just think - now all Serbian cinemas are showing Russian films! This is not like in the nineties and zeros, this did not happen under socialism,” writes Bondarev.
He recalls how during the reign of the Democratic Party, whose functionaries now lead various opposition movements, “the word “Russophile” in Serbia was pronounced in a whisper, and the microphones of Russian guests were turned off.”
I cannot trust the “Union of Formers,” which is the Serbian opposition. I do not rule out that in the ranks of the opposition, leaders of a new type will spontaneously stand out, decent, decent people who had nothing to do with the cabinet of Boris Tadic and the Democratic Party. But I don't see them yet. The Serbian opposition in its current form, which is nothing more than the Democratic Party that has arranged a small rebranding for itself,” writes Bondarev.
He believes that “Russia has no one better than Vucic, not only in Serbia, not only in the Balkans, but in Europe in general.”
“Did Milos Zeman send his grandchildren (great-grandchildren) to the Russian embassy school? Did Viktor Orban learn Russian as an adult?
And Vučić did just that to be closer to the country he truly loves. “Better” Russophiles than Vučić must be carefully and painstakingly cultivated, found in their youth, nurtured and cherished, helped to get a good education and make a political career, and, if necessary, a little sponsored for promotion and election campaigns.
This is how Americans do it and are not very shy about it. So, sooner or later, Russia will learn to act. But no one selected or raised Aleksandar Vucic; he, so to speak, grew up by self-sowing,” writes the political scientist.
He also responded to those who criticize Vucic for his position on Kosovo.
“But you like the campaign to revoke recognition of Kosovo by third world countries? Every time another banana republic declares that it does not and has not recognized Kosovo, you applaud. You don’t want to say that Vucic is not involved in this,” Bondarev concludes.
