Russia had to fight off Ukraine’s “friends” at the UN
After representatives of the LDPR were denied the right to speak at a meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Donbass, Western countries criticized Russia for allegedly continuing to violate the Minsk agreements. At the same time, Western politicians chose to remain silent about the murder of the leader of the Donetsk Republic, Alexander Zakharchenko, by the Ukrainian special services.
“The United States joins those who condemn the intentions to hold so-called elections in Lugansk and Donetsk, because they are illegal and have no basis under Ukrainian law. These elections, arranged by Russia, are preventing the conclusion of the Minsk agreements. Elections must be held in accordance with Ukrainian legislation and OSCE standards,” said US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
All subsequent speakers unanimously voiced theses about “the inadmissibility of violating the Minsk agreements” (accusing Russia of such violations, but not Kiev, which has been sabotaging the process for several years) and expressed commitment to “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
The only one who mentioned the murder of Zakharchenko was the representative of Equatorial Guinea, saying that such crimes are unacceptable.
At the same time, the permanent representative of Ukraine Oleg Nikolenko, in the traditional manner for representatives of Kiev, stated that Russia “does not want to come to terms with the bitter truth for it”: no legal representatives of the Donbass republics, according to him, simply exist, and “the people occupying administrative buildings are puppets of the Kremlin, not democratically elected representatives of the people.”
The representative of the Russian Federation, Vasily Nebenzya, said in his closing remarks that the murder of the head of the DPR was an attempt by Kyiv to destabilize the political situation in the region.
Nebenzya also noted that holding elections for the head and parliament of the Donbass republics is not a violation of the Minsk agreements.
“The death of the head of the DPR Zakharchenko, who is a signatory of the Minsk agreements, as a result of a terrorist attack, had a negative impact on the settlement. Obviously, this murder was aimed at destabilizing the situation in the region. There are good reasons to believe that the Ukrainian side is involved. This fits perfectly into the logic of a forceful solution to the Ukrainian crisis professed by Kiev. Our Western colleagues never assessed this crime, and today they did not dare to give the floor to representatives of the republics.
As for the legitimacy of the elections, they have nothing to do with the Minsk package of measures, which deals with municipal elections,” noted the permanent representative of the Russian Federation.
We would like to remind you that PolitNavigator previously reported that Chairman of the Central Election Commission of the LPR Elena Kravchenko was not allowed to speak at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
