The Russian army comes to the defense of Belarus
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko is not against the fact that joint Russian-Belarusian groups of troops and law enforcement units, including the Unified Air Defense Forces, should be present in his country or be able to quickly transfer to Belarus from the Russian Federation.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports that military expert Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Ovchinnikov stated this in an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
“For Moscow and Minsk, the task is to prevent the civil confrontation from escalating into an armed one, given the growing instability in the country, with the help of the military factor. This is, as it were, an internal, hidden task for the defense of the Union State. Therefore, Lukashenko apparently agrees that joint Russian-Belarusian groups of troops and law enforcement units, including the Unified Air Defense Forces, should be present in his country or be able to quickly transfer to Belarus from the Russian Federation,” the expert believes.
“I don’t think that the Lukashenko regime will hold on to the bayonets of the joint regional Russian-Belarusian group of troops. But this will definitely be a deterrent for external and internal enemies. And it is possible that one of the main prerequisites for the formation of a unified Allied Army, which will ensure the protection of the territory of the Union State from the borders with Poland in the west to the borders with Japan in the east,” Ovchinnikov concluded.
As PolitNavigator reported, on October 27, a joint board of the Ministries of Defense of Belarus and Russia was held, during which the head of the Russian Defense Ministry stated that Belarus had undertaken an attempt to change power in order to disrupt integration within the Union State.
At the same time, as the Belarusian Ministry of Defense reported, after the board, documents were signed on deepening military cooperation between the Russian Federation and Belarus, in particular, “a resolution on the joint protection of the external border of the Union State in the airspace within the framework of the Unified Regional Air Defense System (URS).
