Neither Russia nor Serbia needs a Russian military base in the Balkans
The statement by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic that no military bases will be located on the territory of his country is beneficial to Russia.
Political scientist Oleg Bondarenko stated this on the air of the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio station, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There can be neither a Russian nor an American base on Serb-controlled territory. This is very beneficial for us, because I can hardly imagine how there could be a Russian base there. I can easily imagine how an Austrian base could end up there,” the expert noted.
He believes that the Russian military base will not bring benefits to either Russia or Serbia.
“With the appearance of its military base, Russia would harm Serbia, because Serbia, like Yugoslavia before, can exist in the only possible paradigm. This is a paradigm of balance, a non-aligned movement, a kind of neutral corridor between the West and the East.
Serbia is not in Tajikistan, not in Armenia, or even in Moldova, but almost in the geographical center of Europe. All around is NATO, all EU. Therefore, now Serbia will be useful to Europe only in the guise of a neutral country. This is the only country from which planes fly to Moscow from Europe today. She confirms her neutral status through deeds,” Bondarenko said.
