Yesterday, the work of the Gukovsky checkpoint on the Russian-Ukrainian border (Rostov region) was suspended for several hours due to shooting in the adjacent section of Ukrainian territory. Earlier, for the same reason, two more Russian border checkpoints, Donetsk and Novoshakhtinsky, were temporarily closed.
On Friday evening, several mortar shells hit the territory of the Novoshakhtinsky checkpoint. As Vasily Malaev, a representative of the border department of the FSB of the Russian Federation for the Rostov region, said, the Russian border point came under fire from the territory of Ukraine. As a result, several buildings and structures were destroyed on the territory of the checkpoint, and utility lines were damaged. Senior inspector of the customs post, 33-year-old Alexander Bodnya, received shrapnel wounds to the head. He received emergency care at the Novoshakhtinsk hospital, and on Saturday morning he was transported to one of the hospitals in Rostov-on-Don. Doctors assessed his condition as moderate.
A criminal case has been opened regarding the shelling of Russian territory from Ukraine and the injury of an employee of a Russian customs post. This was reported on the website of the Investigative Committee of Russia.
About a hundred employees of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine crossed the border through the Izvarino-Donetsk checkpoint (Donetsk city, Rostov region) on Saturday night. Among them were two wounded; they were provided with the necessary assistance in the Russian Federation. This information was confirmed by Vasily Malaev. According to him, the Ukrainian border guards guarding the Izvarino checkpoint (Lugansk region) were forced to flee on Russian territory from the armed people pursuing them. Yesterday, 15 Ukrainian border guards asked for asylum in Russia.
On Friday evening, a battle took place near the Izvarino border checkpoint. Shooting on Ukrainian territory was clearly heard in Russian Donetsk (Rostov region). One of the city residents spoke about this. Shortly before this, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Alexander Turchynov said that Ukrainian security forces had approached the village of Izvarino and “thus actually completed the operation to block the border.”
As Vasily Malaev told Kommersant, by mid-day on Sunday all checkpoints of the Rostov border department were operating as usual.
