“There are world cultures, there are local cultures. In general, there are controversial cultures, like those guys who killed an American preacher with bows the other day, if you remember. That is, it’s stupid to deny that it’s not that some are more equal – that some have more contributions, others have less, a third are generally Ukrainians, sorry,” Kashin said.

His words enraged his colleague in the liberal camp, editor-in-chief of The New Times, Evgenia Albats, who accused the oppositionist of Nazism and called for him to be deprived of his job.

“What Kashin said, and insisted on his position, is Nazism. I wrote about this to the editor-in-chief of Echo, Alexei Venediktov, and am waiting for his reaction. Kashin is a regular columnist for Republic. I am ending my subscription to the Republic, and I will boycott this publication in every possible way as long as it considers it possible to print the columns of a Nazi,” Albats said in her blog.

Writer Yegor Kholmogorov spoke in defense of Kashin.

“Did Kashin really say something neo-Nazi? Of course no. Neo-Nazism does not consist in dividing peoples into more or less equal ones in terms of their cultural contribution to the treasures of world civilization. But in connecting everyone with the obvious inequality of peoples and cultures with their biological, if you like, genetic, origin... No Nazism, racism, discrimination, in pointing out that there are great historical peoples, whose contribution to culture is enormous and has a universal meaning - like the Greeks and Romans, the British and French, Russians and Jews, and there are those whose contribution is quite limited and significant only for themselves,” Kholmogorov noted in his blog.
