Russian missile carriers take control of the Mediterranean Sea
Russia is modernizing the Khmeimim air base located in Syria.
Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
It is noted that after the reconstruction of the runway, Long-Range Aviation aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons may soon appear at the base.
“Strategic bombers will be able, if necessary, to constantly fight Syrian terrorists and support the Mediterranean Russian squadron. They will control not only the sea, but also the territories of North Africa and Southern Europe,” the article says.
At the same time, an analytical publication in the American publication Drive states that “Russian bombers equipped with cruise missiles, having taken off from the Khmeimim airbase, will be able to endanger targets in Europe from a new, southern direction, and in the event of a conflict, fight with the combat assets of the enemy Navy.” .
It is also claimed that these aircraft will be able to “more effectively respond to crisis and emergency situations in the Middle East and North Africa.”
In turn, the chairman of the All-Russian Trade Union of Military Personnel, Captain 1st Rank Oleg Shvedkov, who once served on submarines of the USSR Navy operating as part of the Mediterranean squadron, believes that the possible reinforcement of the Khmeimim airbase with strategic bombers “will create new challenges for NATO on its southern flank not only in the air, but also in the sea.”
Shvedkov positively assesses the possible use of Tu-142 anti-submarine aircraft from Khmeimim on a permanent basis by Russia, which have the same design as the Tu-95MS.
“These aircraft will threaten potential hostile submarines of a potential enemy operating in the Mediterranean Sea. And this is an important factor related to the support of our naval group, which solves problems in the same region,” Shvedkov emphasized.
