The planes circled several times over a Canadian warship that had entered the Black Sea.

Defense Secretary Rob Nicholson called the incident "unnecessarily provocative and risky and risks escalating tensions in the region at a time when a fragile truce has only just come into force."

The minister says the planes circled the USS Toronto in such a way as not to pose a threat. Three aircraft took part in the incident - two fighters and an observation aircraft.

The warship Toronto was heading to NATO's Sea Breeze exercise, taking place in the Black Sea with the participation of Ukraine.
