Moscow risks losing its shaky recent gains in Moldova, which just months ago was hailed as a model of compromise between Russia and the West after the ouster of oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc.

We are talking about the threat of the creation in the Parliament of Moldova of a coalition of socialists of President Igor Dodon with former associates of Plahotniuc from the pro-Western Democratic Party - the threat of early elections, which both forces are trying to avoid, risking gaining fewer votes than they have now, forces such a step of force.

“Today Plahotniuc is not in the country, but his people remain: there are 22 members of the Democratic Party in parliament, the prime minister and a number of heads of ministries are former democrats. And if Dodon creates an alliance on the terms of the Democratic Party (PDM), which, according to him, has cleared itself of corrupt officials, then the Democrats will have the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministries of Defense, Education, and Economy. This means that foreign policy will be built on a Western model, Russia will have to give in, education in schools will become Romanian, and defense will be built according to NATO standards,” said Victor Shelin, chairman of the Social Democratic Party of the Republic of Moldova (RM), in an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta. .

He believes that playing with the Democrats will affect the upcoming presidential elections in the fall - Dodon may lose them, since the majority of the population considers the Democratic Party to be the culprit of the people's troubles, involved in the “theft of the century”, when $1 billion was transferred from Moldovan banks to offshores. Money of power They promised to return it to the population, but they never did. Moreover, they shifted their payment onto the shoulders of taxpayers.
