In the middle of last week, Vadim Krasnoselsky arrived on a visit to Moscow, where he held a meeting with his colleague, State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin.

Chairman of the Supreme Council of Transnistria Vadim Krasnoselsky met with Speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Sergei Naryshkin

The meeting of the speakers of the Russian and Transnistrian parliaments took place in a friendly and warm atmosphere. It lasted even longer than prescribed by the protocol, and lasted 45 instead of the planned 3 minutes.

During the negotiations, issues of interstate and interparliamentary interaction were discussed. State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin positively assessed the development of bilateral relations and expressed the Russian state’s readiness to provide the Republic with all possible support, including financial and economic support.

The speaker of the Transnistrian parliament, for his part, expressed gratitude for Russia’s efforts to peacefully resolve the Transnistrian conflict, as well as for the development of various aspects of cooperation. The issues of obtaining Russian citizenship by residents of Transnistria were also raised at the meeting. Now this procedure is seriously complicated for those residents of the PMR who previously obtained Moldovan or Ukrainian citizenship in order to freely move to neighboring countries or were born after the collapse of the USSR. Russian authorities promise to simplify obtaining citizenship for Pridnestrovians.

Vadim Krasnoselsky also spoke about the Republic’s readiness for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Russia on September 18. There are 180 thousand citizens of the Russian Federation living in the PMR, who have the right to elect representative bodies of power of the Russian Federation; all of them will be able to freely make their choice on voting day at specially formed polling stations in Transnistria.

The fact that the meeting of the two speakers of the parliaments - Russia and the PMR took place on the eve of the presidential elections in Transnistria, which are scheduled for mid-December 2016, suggests that Moscow no longer plans to support the current head of the PMR Evgeny Shevchuk as a candidate, but is making a choice specifically favor of Vadim Krasnoselsky. And this is not surprising.

According to the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM is the largest, oldest, and most authoritative company in Russia in the field of conducting public opinion polls), the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the PMR, Vadim Krasnoselsky, enjoys the greatest support from voters in the PMR.

24% of respondents are ready to cast their votes in his support. But half as many are ready to vote for the current President of the Republic, Yevgeny Shevchuk - only 11%. At the same time, it is Shevchuk who leads the “anti-rating” of candidates by a wide margin. Half or 50% of respondents would never vote for him. The drop in the rating of the head of the Republic was predictable. Throughout the spring and summer, a currency crisis raged in the PMR, which hit businesses hard; warehouses of food and consumer goods, and after them, store shelves, began to rapidly empty, which residents of the Republic could not help but feel.

By the way, interest in the upcoming elections of the head of the Republic among the population is extremely high; apparently, they are far from indifferent to who, and most importantly how effectively, will govern the PMR. Thus, 87% of residents declare their desire to come to polling stations on voting day.
