Russian troops cooled Georgia's warlike fervor
For Georgia to become a NATO member, it will have to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and North Ossetia.
Director of the International Institute of Modern States Alexey Martynov said this in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“As long as there are Russian military bases in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, we can assume that these conflicts have been settled,” the expert believes.
He also doubts that Georgia will join the North Atlantic Alliance.
“The NATO Charter does not provide for the membership of countries with unresolved territorial claims. For Georgia to become a NATO member, it will have to accept the current status quo. One can even assume that only by recognizing the independence of Abkhazia and Ossetia, Georgia will be able to bring its entry into NATO closer,” says the political scientist.
He also agreed that the main factor that there will be no war is the Russian bases in this region.
“Yes, this is our responsibility for the fate of all peoples throughout the post-Soviet space. This responsibility is historical. And we carry it for many years. Both our recognition of the republics and military bases are the most real guarantee against the resumption of any hostilities on their borders with Georgia,” Martynov concluded.
