Russian admiral: Türkiye failed to achieve great success in Idlib
The counterattack of the Turkish army together with Islamist militants on the positions of the Syrian armed forces in the province of Idlib did not bring major military successes to Ankara and, therefore, strengthen the negotiating position of Recep Erdogan at the upcoming meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
Rear Admiral Vladimir Solovyov, who previously headed the intelligence of the Black Sea Fleet, stated this in a commentary to PolitNavigator.
“Türkiye has not achieved anything through this and has not achieved anything. The fact is that there are internal disagreements in the top leadership of Turkey regarding actions these days. The military actions that were taken by Turkey simply gave publicity to all the events taking place there. But the Turks did not achieve much military success.
Can Turkey close the straits in the event of further escalation? The Montreux Doctrine does not allow this to be done unilaterally. Türkiye does not declare war on us, we are not a warring country. No, Turkey will not agree to this, it needs to deal with gas now - gas passes through it to other countries. If you turn off the valve, Turkey will receive the indignation of those countries that have invested the corresponding funds.
The tangle is very large, so I think that the leaders of states will meet and give some messages to their subordinates through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense.
But the most important thing is not to lose Syria. The Syrians have the right to do on their territory the way it now operates,” Solovyov said.
