Russian expert: Dodon found himself in a stalemate
The collapse of the ruling coalition in Moldova puts President Igor Dodon in a difficult situation - the Socialist Party risks worsening its result in early parliamentary elections, and this could negatively affect Dodon’s prospects for re-election to a second term next year.
About it in your Telegram channel Russian political scientist Alexey Martynov argues.
In his opinion, Dodon has the opportunity to avoid an early parliamentary campaign, but this will also be a scenario that threatens electoral losses - an alliance of the socialists with the Democratic Party of the oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc who fled abroad.
“The unnatural coalition in Moldova has given a long life. Now for three months they will try to assemble a new coalition and a new government.
And, if last time external forces intervened on the topic of driving out the “Plakhish”, now Russia, the USA and the EU have no subject for consensus in Moldova. And Moldovan politicians themselves are unable to agree on anything.
So, most likely, turbulence will intensify, and Moldova will face new parliamentary elections in February.
The result of Dodon’s socialists in the new early elections is far from obvious, and exactly a year later there will be presidential elections,” argues Martynov.
He explained to PolitNavigator that in the early parliamentary elections, the result of the socialists could worsen due to the loss of about 10% of the votes, which could be “bitten off” by Renato Usatii’s Our Party, who recently returned to the country.
“So now Dodon faces a dilemma: either disgrace himself in the parliamentary elections and, most likely, lose the presidential elections, or immediately enter into a natural alliance in parliament with Plahotniuc’s democrats, form a new government and honestly recognize his status as the new “Plakhish”.
But here the Americans and Europeans will probably object. And people may not understand - just at the end of the construction season, Moldovan migrant workers return home. In general, you won’t envy Igor Nikolaevich,” comments Martynov.
