Russian expert explained the danger of Lukashenko’s multi-vector approach
There is a threat that Alexander Lukashenko, who adopted the idea of the so-called. “multi-vector” Belarus, uses Russia as a resource in the upcoming presidential elections, and after that reorients itself to the West. Political scientist Dmitry Bolkunets stated this at a round table in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Lukashenko’s statements often do not coincide with real actions. It can be assumed that he will delay until the last minute in order to do nothing until the presidential elections, but receive preferences and bonuses in the form of energy subsidies and access to loans.
After the presidential elections, I do not rule out that Lukashenko will pursue a policy of moving away from Russia as quickly and harshly as possible, in order to preserve for himself and his successors the opportunity to maneuver to the West,” Bolkunets said.
In his opinion, the danger is posed by the fact that representatives of Belarus headed the Eurasian Commission and the CSTO for the next few years.
“Lukashenko gets additional opportunities in the integration space. Considering his activities in the Union State, it should not be ruled out that there will be further slowdown in the Eurasian Economic Union,” Bolkunets said.
