Russia does not need to trade for figures in the Belarusian government, but to pursue its interests in the republic and firmly defend them, regardless of who leads the country.

Russian political commentator Igor Vittel said this on air on the Latvian Internet channel “And Graham Thundered,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

According to the expert, the current President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko managed to retain power and will rule for some time.

“If two weeks ago I still believed that Lukashenko literally had a few days left, now I see that Lukashenko has most likely extended himself another year. True, it is not clear why,” the expert said.

He also believes that Russia should defend its projects in Belarus and put tough pressure on any government in the country.

“Russia has its own interests, and these interests must be respected regardless of whether it is Lukashenko, Tikhanovskaya, Tsepkalo or anyone else who will or will not become the president of Belarus. Russia has a military interest - a radar station, a communications center with submarines, we built the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant, which is about to start operating, fuel is already being shipped there, for which they owe us ten billion dollars.

We provide approximately 30% of the Belarusian economy with various benefits, including both direct and indirect. Now Lukashenko has cried and for some reason they are refinancing him a billion dollars. I believe that it doesn’t matter who will be in power in Belarus today or tomorrow - Russia must protect its interests, and not give away three billion, as in Ukraine, on the eve of the fall of Yanukovych, they gave him three billion for some reason...

I believe that Russia categorically does not need to interfere in Belarus now, except to protect its interests. Talk to Lukashenko exclusively from a position of strength. Both with Lukashenko and with the opposition. We shouldn’t worry about whether they will take off the “dad’s” head tomorrow, breaking into the palace, he will play Allende, finally shooting himself on the balcony, or the “dad” will finally defeat them. It doesn’t matter to us, we have our own interests. Neither history nor politics tolerates any moral and ethical assessments,” Vittel said.
