Russian general: “Now the role of the CSTO will increase sharply”
The United States actually fled Afghanistan in disgrace.
This opinion was conveyed by the PolitNavigator correspondent in an interview published by Komsomolskaya Pravda, expressed by the former head of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, former Deputy Prime Minister, Army General Anatoly Kulikov.
“And now we are witnessing a massive, shameful flight of the United States from Afghanistan, which has even caused criticism within the United States. In particular, Trump states that - I gave you a plan for a phased, expedient withdrawal without serious consequences - both for Afghanistan and for the United States. But Biden did not take advantage of this plan, Trump says. And, indeed, I think that the United States has lost a lot, so to speak, it has fallen in the eyes of its Middle Eastern and Middle Eastern partners. And this is not good,” Kulikov noted.
He was also asked what Russia’s steps should be in the current situation.
“Of course, we must strengthen our southern borders. If, for example, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, with whom Afghanistan borders, they have relatively well-trained, prepared armed forces, it seems to me that Tajikistan can be considered the weakest link here. But that's where our base is. And, of course, we need to strengthen it. Despite the Taliban’s promises, so to speak, not to touch, not to cross the border. But, as they say, an armored train must stand on a siding - in readiness,” the general believes.
“I don’t think that the Taliban will immediately begin to further develop their offensive against the Central Asian republics, so to speak, our allies. But still... There are many questions for the CSTO. I think that the role of the CSTO will now sharply increase, in terms of its practical influence - both military-technical and military-political in nature,” Kulikov concluded.
