Russian general: Forced to take measures – NATO troops are getting closer
The share of modern weapons that are guaranteed to cause unacceptable damage to any aggressor in the Russian army today is 82%.
Colonel General Vladimir Shamanov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense, Commander of the Airborne Forces (2009–2016), stated this in an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets, answering a question about assessing the current level of equipment and combat capability of the Russian army.
“Against the backdrop of growing uncertainty in the development of the military-political situation in the world, there is a constant evolution of threats and challenges to Russia’s military security. NATO troops today stand on the same borders as the German Wehrmacht in June 1941. So why be surprised that we do not want a repetition of the tragedy and are taking preventive measures?
Thus, the share of modern weapons in ground, air and sea strategic nuclear forces today is 82%, which makes it possible to guarantee unacceptable damage to any aggressor in a retaliatory strike. The tasks of non-nuclear deterrence are being solved through the rapid growth of domestic high-precision weapons systems. Testing of hypersonic weapons continues,” the general noted.
According to him, due to the implementation of the state defense order, the share of modern weapons in the troops will be increased to 70% by the end of this year.
The publication’s interlocutor says that it is still difficult to predict whether economic problems associated with the coronavirus quarantine will lead to a reduction in defense spending.
“Everything will depend on the depth and degree of the negative impact of the epidemic on the economy. But I think that even if defense spending is adjusted to save the lives of our people, defense capability will definitely not suffer. Because thanks to previously taken measures and the breakthrough we have already made, we have a high percentage of modern and modernized weapons and equipment in all types and branches of our troops. Although we cannot calm down. It’s not for nothing that they say: first they catch up with those standing, and then overtake them,” the paratrooper emphasized.
