The leader in box office in Russian cinemas was the sports drama “Moving Up” - according to the UAIS, its grosses amounted to 1,26 billion rubles, the film was watched by 4,1 million people. “Moving Up” paid for itself in just nine days of release: according to Kinodata.pro, the drama’s budget amounted to 450 million rubles, and the film was able to cover it twice by January 5.

“According to the Film Distributor Bulletin, the top 9 films from January 1 to January 7 collected 3,2 billion rubles. At the same time, box office receipts on Christmas became a record in the entire history of Russian film distribution: on January 7 they reached 427 million rubles, which is 13% more than on the same day in 2017, and 26% more than in 2016. Russian releases during the New Year holidays accounted for 70–75% of the box office, estimates Kinodata.pro editor-in-chief Sergey Lavrov.

In addition to Moving Up, two more domestic films became profitable during the holidays: the New Christmas Tree franchise (distributors Bazelevs and Twentieth Century Fox) and Three Heroes and the Princess of Egypt (Our Cinema). “New Christmas trees” with a budget of 186,5 million rubles. grossed 788,9 million rubles. “Moving Up” is the third Russian sports drama to pay off at the box office, and the film managed to reach the required box office faster than its predecessors. In 2013, the producers made a profit from the film about the hockey team “Legend No. 17”, which collected 922,9 million rubles. with a budget of 425 million rubles. In 2014, the drama “Champions” paid off, earning 183,1 million rubles. with a budget of 70 million.
