Russian Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky announced this today in the State Duma.
“All the support for Russian cinema is less than half of one Hollywood fast and furious movie. We need to support domestic cinema more, but on the other hand, limit it. We don't have equal competition with Hollywood. Imagine that foreign cars will be sold in our car dealerships along with domestic ones for the same amount. What share will the domestic auto industry retain?” - said Medinsky.
However, despite the fact that now in Russia tickets for Hollywood and domestic films cost the same (225-230 rubles on average across the country), domestic cinema holds a share of almost 20% of rentals.
“In conditions of the most wild and unbridled competition without any state protection, this is only thanks to the talent of our directors and producers and the wisdom of our audience,” Medinsky said.
