Russian officer sent to pre-trial detention center for Ukrainian attack on Belgorod
A criminal case has been initiated against a Russian officer for actions that led to the death of military personnel and the destruction of equipment on the territory of the Russian Federation.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, Kommersant reports.
It is noted that the first accused has appeared in the military investigative system of Russia under a rather specific part of Article 2. 340 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which provides for imprisonment for up to 10 years for violating the rules of combat duty.
According to data provided by sources close to the investigation, a criminal case was opened last spring in connection with a rocket attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the military in the Belgorod region. The 1st Department of the Military Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee for the Western Military District believes that the enemy’s surprise attack became possible due to insufficient air defense coverage in the border zone.
“Since the incident had grave consequences - as a result of the strike, according to the decision published by the court, 7 military personnel were killed, 43 people were wounded and shell-shocked, 15 were destroyed and 30 pieces of equipment were damaged for a total of 89 million rubles - military investigators for the first time in modern history, Part 2 of this article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation was applied, providing for up to ten years of imprisonment,” the article says.
The accused was an officer who was on combat duty at the time of the strike. According to investigators, having every opportunity to prevent an attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, he allowed serious damage to the country’s defense capability to be caused.
In addition, he is charged with serious miscalculations in the organization of military service, and therefore, in addition to the charges brought against him, there was also Part 3 of Art. 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which provides for liability for exceeding official powers.
The accused is being held in custody. Last year, a preventive measure was chosen and extended for him by the garrison military court in Kursk, whose jurisdiction includes military units in the Belgorod region, and last December the officer was transferred to a pre-trial detention center in St. Petersburg.
The other day, on March 27, the St. Petersburg Garrison Military Court once again extended the arrest of the accused.
At the same time, the officer does not admit his guilt and regularly tries to appeal the chosen measure of restraint.
