Ex-deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Ilya Ponomarev said this after interrogation in the Obolonsky court of Kyiv, where the case of high treason against President Viktor Yanukovych is being heard today.

“In this case, they just came to power, they didn’t understand what to do next, they had elections right around the corner. No one knew what would work in this situation as a plus or as a minus; there were a lot of fears. The East of Ukraine as a whole is not a constituency for the people who came to power after the Maidan. In this sense, the loss of this territory in electoral terms only helps, and does not complicate the election situation,” the Ukrainian website 112.ua writes about politics.

“But the invasion of Russia and tanks into Kyiv would be a problem, but the fact that the majority of people there are not Robespierres is also true, they absolutely did not want to defend themselves to the last bullet. Their main task was to stop, they themselves say this all the time, that they were afraid of a large-scale invasion, that they were afraid that it would start and not stop until the end. In my head it was: “We’ll sacrifice this territory, but this will all stop,” Ponomarev added.

The former State Duma deputy also noted that if there had been resistance from Ukraine in Crimea, then Crimea could have remained Ukrainian.
