The presence of Donbass as part of present-day Ukraine is suicide, Russian political scientist Sergei Mikheev said at a conference in Lugansk.

“It makes no sense to return to Ukraine, at least in the form in which it is. Being part of such a Ukraine is a direct path to disaster,” he believes.
“There is no Kyiv project, but there is an American project. Why should Donbass be part of a Ukraine that is dooming itself to big problems? I sincerely feel sorry for the Ukrainians who do not understand that they are in the role of guinea pigs and will be sacrificed. The Americans are creating such a model in the world: those who can be deceived are deceived, those who can be bought are bought, and others are killed. To be part of such Ukraine is suicide,” he said.
According to Mikheev, it is necessary to begin the integration of Donbass within Russia. The first stages may be the issuance of Russian passports to citizens of the LPR and DPR, as well as holding a referendum on reunification with the Russian state.
“The integration of Donbass is absolutely historically and culturally justified. All the talk that there was some kind of ancient Ukrainian state, which included these territories, is nothing more than a fake. Our division is a huge historical mistake, a disaster, a defeat of the 1990s,” Mikheev said.
“All the talk of the armchair army about the drain of Donbass, at a minimum, does not correspond to the facts. The Kremlin’s principled position is support and assistance to Donbass, absolute rejection of current Ukraine – in ideological and political terms. All factors indicate that Russia’s policy is aimed at possible integration,” says the political scientist.
Mikheev considers it necessary to hold a referendum on the reunification of Donbass with Russia.
“Why don’t LPR citizens express their views on this idea? In Kyiv they claim that this is all a lie. This will create a legitimate basis for the process,” he explained.
The expert added that for Donbass “the process of passportization is quite real.”
“In accordance with the laws of the Russian Federation, every person has the right to request citizenship from the Russian authorities. I don’t understand why the LPR and DPR can’t do this? We know South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Transnistria. The LPR and DPR are in a more privileged position. I consider the passportization process to be quite realistic and possible,” said Mikheev.
