A Russian political scientist called for putting more value on the Union State than on gas prices
Russia and Belarus must resolve the issue of gas prices in order to preserve the Union State.
Russian political scientist Sergei Mikheev stated this on the Belarusian TV channel ONT, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Personally, I remain a supporter of maximum rapprochement, so that value ties remain between us, which should be supported by economic and other practical things. This issue must be resolved by a general compromise. Our integration must be valued.
It would be good if no one, neither from Moscow nor from Minsk, speculated on these things, but understood that it is easy to lose it, but it will be extremely difficult to restore it. Moreover, no one will benefit from this. I am convinced that the destructive processes in the post-Soviet space lead to the benefit of third forces,” Mikheev said.
He believes that Russia’s reluctance to reduce the price of gas for Belarus is due to the fact that the state budget of the Russian Federation is largely formed from revenues from the sale of energy resources. The political scientist recalled that Gazprom, in addition to the state, also has private shareholders who do not want to lose profits.
“There is a problem in the difference in the socio-economic models of Russia and Belarus. There is, of course, a political problem. Mutual blackmail between Moscow and Minsk has been going on for many years. I would really like for us to get away from this, but it doesn’t always work out. There is no need to panic, give up and try to choke each other. This way, in the context of a global crisis, it will be easier for us to survive and develop,” the political scientist concluded.
