Reuters reports that a message was circulated on militant Twitter saying that a group linked to ISIS had claimed responsibility.
The BBC clarifies that a statement on behalf of the group appeared in the Telegram messenger. British journalists recall that the A321 crashed in Sinai, where the Egyptian government is fighting militants associated with the local wing of the Islamic State.
Egyptian authorities reported that a Russian passenger plane that had previously disappeared from radar, en route from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg, crashed over the Sinai Peninsula.
The Airbus A-321 belongs to the Russian company Kogalymavia. There were 224 people on board - 217 passengers and seven crew members.
Egyptian media report that the plane's wreckage was found in the central region of the Sinai Peninsula.
The Federal Air Transport Agency confirmed the loss of contact with the airliner.
“Today at 6:51 a.m. aircraft A-321 flight 9268 took off from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg. At 7:14 near Larnaca, according to preliminary data, communication with the plane was lost and the aircraft's mark disappeared from the radar screens. Since then, it has not been in touch and has not appeared on radar,” Sergei Izvolsky, a representative of Rosaviatsia, told Interfax.
Earlier, Egyptian authorities reported that the cause of the crash of the Russian plane, which was carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members, could have been due to technical reasons.
