Russian senator accused Latvia of “cynicism and duplicity”
Possessing the humiliating status of non-citizens, Baltic Russians are used by local authorities to beg money from the European Union.
This was stated by the head of the Federation Council Commission for the Protection of State Sovereignty of the Russian Federation, Andrei Klimov, during the VII World Congress of Compatriots Living Abroad, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We have always raised, are raising and will continue to raise the question that a significant number of residents of a number of states, including Latvia, are illegally deprived of the right to vote.
Moreover, when the EU allocates subsidies to these countries, they count everyone, and the subsidies are allocated to these people. That is, when they receive money, these people are listed as existing, as their citizens, but when it is necessary to allow people to participate in elections, they are not counted.
And in our country, if you are a foreign agent, you have the right not just to vote, but to be elected. That is, we have such freedoms that it just drags on and on,” Klimov said.
He believes that the authorities of the Baltic limitrophes demonstrate “cynicism and duplicity.”
“Cynicism and duplicity are organically inherent in this kind of public. But this problem constantly appears in all contacts. Another thing is that today our relations between the EU and the Russian Federation, between the Russian Federation and NATO are at such a level that a whole layer of issues are not being discussed at all, due to the fact that there is no discussion in principle,” the senator added.
