Russian citizenship will become more accessible to foreigners
The Russian Federation will simplify obtaining Russian citizenship not only for residents of Ukraine, but also for the population of other countries.
This was stated by the Chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs and Relations with Compatriots Leonid Kalashnikov, speaking at the International Humanitarian Libyan Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the parliamentarian, the procedure will allow preserving the national citizenship of those countries in which Russian compatriots live.
“The President of the Russian Federation, for humanitarian reasons, granted residents of certain areas of Donbass the right to simplified acquisition of Russian citizenship and had a positive attitude towards the spread of this practice throughout Ukraine. The decision to accept Russian citizenship without renouncing Ukrainian citizenship caused natural discontent and fear on the part of the Ukrainian authorities and Western patrons. Because in fact, a basis is being created for the political consolidation of compatriots, their internal political weight and the ability to defend friendly relations with Russia are significantly increasing,” the politician said.
“Of course, we need to go further, and at the same meeting of Russian legislators with the President of the Russian Federation, me and other comrades proposed that citizens of other states should not require renunciation of their citizenship when acquiring Russian citizenship. We gave examples of Argentina, Germany, and many other countries. The President supported these proposals of ours, although some opponents refer to issues of social security and security. But I hope they will definitely be resolved through our common efforts; all we need is political will,” Kalashnikov said.
