A Russian liberal journalist was punched in the face in Donetsk and expelled to the Russian Federation
In Donetsk today, Pavel Kanygin, a correspondent for the Russian liberal Novaya Gazeta, was detained and then expelled to the Russian Federation.
The day before, he published a report about yesterday’s spontaneous protest rally near the building of the Donetsk Regional State Administration, claiming that most of the demonstrators demanded that the head of the DPR, Alexander Zakharchenko, withdraw military equipment from residential areas, where Ukrainian troops were striking in response.
However, residents of Donetsk who attended the rally described the action differently: for example, political scientist Roman Manekin argued that the main demand was the need for the DPR to attack in order to drive the Ukrainian army away from the city’s borders and stop the shelling.

Kanygin claims that today he was detained by MGB officers due to lack of accreditation, after which a 5-hour interrogation took place, as a result of which the reporter ended up with a black eye.
“The hook in the eye happened like this. The MGB officer in camouflage asks me:
– Are you a bitch for us or for dill?
- Not for anyone. “I am for peace,” I say.
And he hit it with force,” said Kanygin.
