As noted by RBC with reference to the press service of the department, “due to the identified non-compliance of edible salt produced by State Enterprise “Artemsol” (Ukraine) with the requirements for the content of impurities, iodine and organoleptic indicators, control over these products has been strengthened at checkpoints across the state border and in retail networks." The research results “confirmed the violation of the requirements of current legislation by the specified manufacturer.”
The import of edible salt produced by Artemsol into Russia has been suspended since January 26, 2015. In mid-January, some regional branches of Rospotrebnadzor sent letters to retail chains asking for information about the presence of salt from Ukrainian and Belarusian producers on store shelves “in order to exclude these products from circulation.” The supervisory agency was interested in the products of Artemsoli, Slavyanskaya Sol, Mozyrsoli and Belkali. Retail chains in the Tula, Tver and Rostov regions and in Mari El received similar letters of recommendation. The reason was given as “claims to the quality of Ukrainian salt.” Large retail chains began to refuse to purchase it.
According to the Association of Manufacturers and Suppliers of Food Products (Rusprodsoyuz), in 2013, Russia accounted for 40% (approximately 0,6 million tons) of table salt imports, of which 80% was salt from Ukraine. At the same time, Russia’s annual need for table salt is about 1,5–1,6 million tons, according to data from Rusprodsoyuz. In the first half of 2014, the share of imported salt in Russia ranged from 51,8% to 62%. The main importers were the Belarusian Mozyrsol and the Ukrainian Artemsol.
