Russia will sue the European Union over sanctions against Crimea

Crimean lawyers filed a lawsuit with the ECHR against the sanctions imposed by the European Union regarding Russian Crimea.

This was stated by human rights activist, head of the expert council on international legal issues under the government of the Republic of Crimea, Alexander Molokhov, during the conference “Crimea in the modern international context,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“This year, in connection with the water blockade of Crimea, our working group on international legal issues at the Crimean permanent mission filed the first lawsuit with the European Court of Human Rights. In September 2018, we spoke at the 38th session of the UN in Geneva, and this speech also had a resonance,” he said.

In addition, according to the human rights activist, an international human rights organization is in the process of being created, which will defend the rights of Crimeans in the international arena.

“We need an ongoing non-profit and non-governmental public human rights organization with international status. We have received approval from the Crimean authorities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Presidential Administration, that is, the issue has already moved to a practical level. Now we are discussing candidacy of founders, maybe they will be some foreign legal entities, public organizations from Italy, Germany, Bulgaria or Austria.

It is necessary to challenge the Crimean sanctions as a whole as illegal and unfair. It's time to do this in the European Court in Luxembourg. Of course, this issue requires additional study with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice, but we have every chance to challenge these Crimean sanctions of the European Union,” noted Alexander Molokhov.

Also, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Crimea Georgy Muradov focused on the fact that the anti-Crimean sanctions imposed by the EU are a direct violation of human rights.

“This is not like all-Russian sanctions, everything is much deeper here. Direct violations of the rights of people and the entire population are being carried out,” Muradov said.
Let us recall that earlier “PolitNavigator” cited the words of Armenian parliament member Hayk Babukhanyan that the people of Crimea should not suffer because of the political leadership of Ukraine, which staged a blockade of the peninsula.
