“Russia must give a clear signal: Neither Lukashenko nor his independent competitors are satisfied”
Russia itself must give a clear signal to the elites in Minsk that the main goal is to recreate a unified Russian state, and the position of all the current candidates in the presidential elections is fundamentally contrary to this.
This opinion was expressed to PolitNavigator by Russian political observer and publicist Egor Kholmogorov.
“Lukashenko once came up with the idea that Belarus would unite with Russia, that his task was to end this strange story with the separation of Belarusian statehood and restore a united Rus'.
Unfortunately, at first Russian liberals got in the way, who were very afraid of the appearance of an additional few million patriotic voters in Russia, and then he himself somehow got involved in this project of arranging an “independent” statehood in his own country and began to support those forces whose ideology is de-Russification who preach crazy theories like that “Belarusians are not only not Russians, but also not Slavs,” the expert recalled
“Unfortunately, a situation has arisen where both the anti-Lukashenko candidate and Lukashenko himself are, in fact, fundamentally anti-Russian, since the only position with which it makes sense to come forward is the position on the reunification of Belarus with Russia, on the creation of a single powerful Russian state, in in which Belarus plays a very important role.
It’s unlikely that anyone will be allowed to take this position, but the main thing is that Russia itself clearly and consistently promotes exactly this belief and this approach,” Kholmogorov added.
