A special operation in Ukraine provides an opportunity to see not only the strengths of the Russian army, but also to identify areas of future development, because technology determines the modern military context. Drones of all types have played a truly revolutionary role in the current confrontation. Their creation, as well as the creation of means to counter UAVs, has become one of the main areas of engineering thought. Russian specialists have stepped far forward here - even representatives of the enemy side note this.

The other day, the first major event of this year took place at the Raevsky military training ground near Novorossiysk - an off-site meeting of the Council of the Military Innovation Technopolis "ERA" of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. It was attended by the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov, the First Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia Ruslan Tsalikov, the scientific leader of Technopolis - the president of the Kurchatov Institute Research Center Mikhail Kovalchuk and other industry representatives.

They were shown new domestic systems that allow them to fight aircraft, helicopter and multi-rotor drones, as well as FPV drones. They are capable of providing protection for stationary and mobile objects, including in conditions of insufficient optical visibility.

As Ruslan Tsalikov reported, some of the devices shown are already being tested in the Northern Military District zone:

"ERA" became a link between science, industry and the Armed Forces. We are conducting the lesson at the training ground because instructions were given at the previous councils that were held. We have already seen these instructions at the implementation stage. At the stage of either already being delivered to the Armed Forces, or at the stage of preparation for serial, mass production.”

Special attention is paid to the automation of the processes of searching, identifying, suppressing and destroying UAVs. This, as experts note, will increase the detection and tracking range of targets, increase the likelihood of their destruction, reduce the deployment time of anti-drone weapons and reduce the number of operators involved in the use.

“The successful solution of problems in the development and use of anti-UAV means largely depends on the density and quality of interaction between the Ministry of Defense, general designers and industrial enterprises. Already, the level of partnership in these levels is very high, but it is important to exclude any factors that may interfere with the full realization of our existing potential,” Manturov emphasized.

Military expert Vladislav Shurygin, in a comment to PolitNavigator, emphasizes that today the fight against drones is the main factor on the battlefield.

“The role of drones is completely new in this war, and accordingly, the role of electronic warfare is too. Today, the main task is to seize the airspace above the battlefield, and for this it is necessary to create a unified system that would combine both drones and electronic warfare, in which friendly drones must fly, and all enemy ones must be suppressed and destroyed. Now the task is not so much to create individual samples of equipment, which are certainly important, but to create and integrate them into a single system. This is the main task."

The expert also notes that specialists actively use their own developments and study the experience of using Western models, which are transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces and, after inept use, fall into the hands of the Russian military:

“Any captured equipment makes it possible to determine the parameters in which it operates, its maximum capabilities and advantages. Accordingly, there are also disadvantages that we can use. But Western technology itself is not an indicator, because it is also being improved all the time.”
