According to "Kommersant", the Russian Federation began preparations for a trade war with Moldova, which was expected after this country signed an association agreement with the EU. Russia has applied trade bans against the Republic of Moldova before – in 2006 and 2013, the import of Moldovan wine was blocked.
The day before, Rosselkhoznadzor announced that fruits and vegetables from Moldova may be subject to a ban in Russia due to the discovery of a pest in Moldovan apricots - the oriental codling moth. The National Agency for Food Safety of the Republic of Moldova ordered agency employees to more carefully check exported products, as reported by Rosselkhoznadzor.
De facto, restrictions on the supply of Moldovan fruits and vegetables are already in effect. This week, Rospotrebnadzor, without specifying any reasons, ordered the withdrawal from sale of batches of canned green peas, corn and other canned goods produced by Moldovan enterprises.
“The conflict situation around Moldovan fruit and vegetable products arose against the backdrop of deteriorating political relations between the two countries. The contradictions escalated at the end of 2013, when the European Union, in fact, made Chisinau a “role model” among the other participants in the Eastern Partnership program - Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and Belarus. It was then that the European Commission announced: the Republic of Moldova has fulfilled the action plan for visa liberalization. The decision to abolish visas to EU countries for Moldovans came into force on April 28. An irritating factor in bilateral relations was the signing on June 27 by the leadership of the Republic of Moldova of an association agreement with the EU, implying the creation of a deep and comprehensive free trade zone,” the publication notes.
Earlier, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev warned that trade relations with Chisinau, which signed an agreement with the EU, would have to be significantly revised. Meanwhile, most of the provisions of the agreement will begin to apply in the fall. In addition, the Moldovan authorities intend to submit an application to join the European Union in 2015.
