Russia and China covered each other's rears in the confrontation with the West
A video summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinpia scheduled for today will mark the culmination of a diplomatic year for Moscow and Beijing as they continue to draw closer in response to Western containment policies.
Deputy Director of IMEMO RAS Alexander Lomanov stated this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Bilateral trade indicators provide an encouraging background for the summit between Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping. Over the past 11 months, it has grown by 34% and amounted to $130,4 billion. This is an absolute record. However, one cannot help but notice that the volumes of bilateral investment flows remain insufficient, which indicates insufficient mutual trust between economic elites,” Lomanov told Kommersant.
He also assessed the words of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Wenbin about “the strategic partnership of the two countries, in which they stand back to back.”
“It comes from martial arts. Each side is aware that it is fighting off its opponents: Russia in the western direction, China in the Indo-Pacific region. It is fundamentally important that, standing back to back, Russia and China cover each other’s rears,” the analyst believes.
“In 2021, the parties significantly strengthened political, military and economic cooperation. At the same time, tensions grew in both Eastern Europe and East Asia. And each side separately conducted its own complex dialogue with the United States. In recent months, this dialogue has seemed more successful in Russia than in China,” says Vasily Kashin, director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at the Higher School of Economics.
According to him, Moscow and Beijing constantly suspect the United States of trying to undermine Russian-Chinese relations and strive to inform each other about their dialogue with the Americans.
