Russia is looking for a replacement for Lukashenko
What is important for Russia is not the procedure for keeping Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in power, but the preservation of the pro-Russian course of this country.
Kommersant columnist Alexey Naumov stated this on the Rossiya 1 TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I observed special operations, followed inaugurations, but I saw a “special inauguration” for the first time. A strong, independent leader who has his feet on the ground will certainly not come to power under cover of secrecy. You could also sit in a bunker and take an oath every 5-6 years right in the bunker, put your hand on the Constitution, and that’s it,” Naumov noted with irony.
At the same time, he called for looking at what was happening from the point of view of Russian interests.
“This corresponds to Russia’s interests, because it is obvious that symbolically this is a rather unsuccessful story for Alexander Lukashenko, well, there cannot be a “secret inauguration” of a strong leader. Russia is only better off for this.
Symbols are important, especially for an authoritarian leader, who is Alexander Lukashenko (he is an authoritarian leader and there is nothing wrong with that). This is quite painful, I think he himself is not very happy with the fact that he carried out all this there under the cover of secrecy, but for Russia, I repeat, this is better.
Because our interests are not maintaining Lukashenko in power, it is maintaining the pro-Russian course in Belarus. And it is obvious that Lukashenko today is not the leader who will lead Belarus for 5 to 10 years,” the expert emphasized.
“That’s absolutely right, the Belarusian course is friendly towards the Russian Federation. And it is obvious that we are conducting a dialogue with Lukashenko, supporting him, but at the same time we are looking for a replacement for him,” Naumov is sure.
