Russia is “catching the Chinese wind in its sails by leaps and bounds”
The State Duma of the Russian Federation ratified today an intergovernmental agreement with China dated January 31 on natural gas supplies along the Far Eastern route.
Deputy Vyacheslav Nikonov reported this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I believe that everything we are doing now in energy cooperation with China is at least 20, or even 30 years late. It was obvious that an energy partnership only with the West, only with Europe, with a stagnating continent - this bet was not the most promising from an economic point of view and, as we see, politically very risky.
Now we are starting to do what we should have done before. We are catching the East Asian Chinese wind in Russian sails and doing it by leaps and bounds. We increase trade turnover with China annually by more than 30%. And, of course, cooperation in the field of supplying the growing Chinese economy with gas is one of the most promising areas of cooperation. Moreover, in China there is now a clear turn in our direction,” Nikonov said.
10 billion cubic meters of fuel per year will be sent to China via the Far Eastern route. Together with supplies via the Power of Siberia main pipeline, the volume of exports to China will reach 48 billion cubic meters per year.
The pipes will be stretched across the Ussuri River in the area of Russian Dalnerechensk and Chinese Hulin. Gas will be produced for China at the Sakhalin-3 field on the island’s coastal shelf.
To launch the project as soon as possible, special conditions will be provided. Personnel involved in the project will be able to cross the border without visas, and equipment will be transported without collecting customs duties. The agreement noted the priority of settlements in rubles and yuan. China gives a price 2-3 times higher than the Russian consumer.
