“Despite the warning from Rosselkhoznadzor to the National Agency for Food Safety of Moldova, in recent days three batches of Moldovan apricots infected with the oriental codling moth have been identified. Due to the high degree of phytosanitary risk, Rosselkhoznadzor does not exclude the possibility of introducing temporary restrictions on the import from Moldova of plant products characteristic of this quarantine facility, such as apples, pears, quince, apricots, cherries, cherries, peaches, nectarines, plums and sloe,” – reported the Rosselkhoznadzor website.
At the same time, the department states that it is ready for consultations in any format convenient for the Moldovan side.
Meanwhile, importers of Moldovan fruits in Russia are already refusing to enter into contracts for the supply of new batches of goods, pointing to the threat of an embargo.
The Infotag agency quotes the head of one of the farms, cultivating more than 350 hectares of an apple orchard in the Briceni region, who says that since March, demand for apples from Moldova has fallen sharply on the Russian market.
“The purchasing price for Moldovan fruit is now significantly lower than in the previous season. Russian companies do not want to sign contracts for the supply of Moldovan apples, citing the situation in the region and the complexity of bilateral relations between Russia and Moldova,” he said.
A representative of the enterprise cited data according to which, in June 2014, wholesale prices for Moldovan Golden Delicious apples were 42% lower than for the corresponding period in 2013.
According to experts, in 2013 Moldova exported 180 tons of apples to Russia - 000% of the total volume of their exports, taking second place in the total volume of Russian apple imports.
In case of problems with exports to Russia, producers and processors of fruits and vegetables from Moldova will need new markets.
As previously reported, the conflict situation around Moldovan fruit and vegetable products arose against the backdrop of deteriorating political relations between the two countries. Moscow said trade relations with Chisinau, which has signed an association agreement with the EU, “will have to be significantly reconsidered.”
