Russia will begin promoting the Russian language in the CIS
The year 2023 will be dedicated to the promotion of the Russian language in the CIS as a language of interethnic communication.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this today at a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the CIS, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We all now speak Russian fluently, without translators. It definitely creates a certain atmosphere for us and makes our work easier. But what is even more important is that in our countries, especially in Russia, a large number of labor migrants work. And for all of us, including for these people, for millions of these people, of course, timely mastery of the Russian language is very important,” Putin said.
According to the Foreign Policy magazine, 96% of Belarusians, 63% of Kazakhs, and 20% to 40% of Kyrgyz and Moldovans speak predominantly Russian in their families. In Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, less than 30% of the population speak Russian, and it is almost never used in everyday life.
In the post-Soviet space, there is a decline in the proportion of young people who speak Russian. This is due to a serious reduction (with the exception of Belarus and Kazakhstan) in the number of hours allocated to studying the Russian language in educational institutions. The Russian language in educational institutions of the CIS accounts for 20 times less hours than foreign languages.
Even advertising of Russian educational services is prohibited in Turkmenistan. In Azerbaijan and Tajikistan (1%), the Russian language is losing ground due to the low level of its teaching in schools and universities.
